The BEST+ Training for international attractiveness of universities will be taking place in the beautiful city of Joensuu in Finland and will be hosted by the University of Eastern Finland.
Joensuu is the vibrant capital of the North Karelia region, and with almost one third of its population being made up of students it is a town where there is always something happening.
Meaning ‘the mouth of the river’, the city of Joensuu, which was founded by the Czar Nikolai I of Russia in 1848, has grown to become the regional capital of North Karelia, and its second largest city. Much of its importance is due to improvements in water traffic when the Saimaa Canal was completed in 1870, which has allowed a lively regional trade, and linked to the city to St. Petersburg in Russia, and via the Volga to both the Black and Caspian seas.
Visitors to Joensuu will find that there is always something to do and see, and of the treats available a day spent in Perhos-Botania, the University Botanical Gardens, is highly recommended. Comprised of five greenhouse complexes, the visitor can travel through a variety of climates on Earth, from arid desert to tropical rain forest, and see a thousand exotic species from all over the globe. Particularly captivating are the giant butterflies which fly freely about the place. Joensuu also houses the Bunker Museum, and the Carelicum or North Karelian Museum, and scattered around are many old wooden churches like the pseudogothic Kirkkokatu cathedral.

At UEF, interdisciplinarity is not something we do, it's who we are. We seek to be number one in Finland when it comes to academic learning environments. We offer first-class education that is bound to make a difference.
We are one of the largest universities in Finland, and home to approximately 15,000 students and 2,800 members of staff.
Our campuses are located in Joensuu, Kuopio and Savonlinna.
UEF is a multidisciplinary university, which offers teaching in more than 100 major subjects. We have four faculties: the Philosophical Faculty, the Faculty of Science and Forestry, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies.
Our activities underscore multidisciplinarity. Our key interdisciplinary research areas are built around four global challenges. These challenges are Ageing, lifestyles and health; Learning in a digitised society; Cultural encounters, mobilities and borders; and Environmental change and sufficiency of natural resources.
In addition to a high standard of teaching, we offer our students a modern study environment, which is under constant development. Student well-being is among our primary concerns.
We have extensive international relations and are involved in several international networks. Our teaching and research staff and students are active in participating in various mobility programmes. We have concluded bilateral agreements of cooperation with approximately 100 universities abroad. Furthermore, we are involved in several international networks and discipline-specific projects.
Together with our networks, we support the well-being and positive development of eastern Finland. Our goal is to be ranked among the leading 200 research universities in the world and, in the strong research areas, among the world's leading 50 research universities.
